On Nov 4, the 126th Canton Fair was successfully concluded in Guangzhou. Xu Bing, Deputy Secretary General and Spokesperson of the Canton Fair and Deputy Director General of China Foreign Trade Centre, introduced the general situation of this session.
Xu said that the 126th Canton Fair was held on the 70th anniversary of the founding of the PRC and it was of great significance. We’ve focused on the task of securing stability while improving the quality of foreign trade under the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era; and rolled out a series of measures to support exhibitors achieve transaction, open up markets, create brands to drive the high quality development of foreign trade, thus bringing more stability and positive energy to the complex and severe foreign trade situation. With the attention and care of the central government and the State Council, under the leadership of the Ministry of Commerce and Guangdong Province, and with the support of local commerce departments and concerted efforts of all the staff, we’ve completed all the tasks and the fair was carried out smoothly.
Xu introduced that the number of the buyers at this session was as expected and the quality of the buyers has been improved steadily against the slowdown of the world economic growth and the complicated and severe foreign trade situation. Buyer attendance of the 126th Canton Fair totaled 186,015 from 214 countries (regions), a decline of 2% over the 124th session.
Buyer attendance from China’s top 10 trading partner countries and regions in 2018 accounted for 61.62% of the total. The number of buyers from “Belt and Road” countries stood at 85,445, an increase of 1.03% over the same period of last year. It accounts for 45.93% of the total, 1.37 percentage points higher over the same period of last year.
Buyer attendance of the top 20 countries and regions accounted for 60.56% of the total. The top 10 countries and regions in terms of buyer attendance are Hong Kong SAR, the United States, India, Thailand, South Korea, Russia, Taiwan Province, Japan, Malaysia and Indonesia.
107 out of the Top 250 Global Retailers in 2019 attended the Fair. Among them were 5 of the Top 10 retailers: Wal-Mart, Schwartz, Amazon, Walgreen and CVS Health.
Lidl in Germany, Lifetime Brands in America, Auchan Group in France, LOCK&LOCK in South Korea, TAURUS GROUP in Spain, KESKO GROUP in Finland, Kawan Lama Group in Indonesia and other international well-known chain enterprises continue to participate in the multinational sourcing activities.
Buyer attendance proportion in terms of industries is: electronics and household electrical appliances accounting for 40.71% of the total, daily consumer goods 31.93%, home decorations 28.34%, gifts 27.23%, and machinery 26.48%.
Xu said that the export transaction has maintained a stable level and the steps of high quality development of foreign trade are accelerated. The accumulated export transaction of this session totaled 207.09 billion RMB Yuan (or 29.288 billion US dollars), a decrease of 1.9% over the 124th session.
Machinery and electrical products contributed to the highest transaction of 15.941 billion USD, accounting for 54.43%; transaction volume of light industrial products stood at 7.22 billion USD, accounting for 24.65% of the total; textile and garment 1.683 billion USD, accounting for 5.75%.
The transaction volume of the private enterprises reached 22.164 billion USD, an increase of 0.28%, accounting for 75.67% of the total.
The transaction volume in brand zone reached 9.246 billion US dollars, accounting for 31.57% of the total.
The transaction with “Belt and Road” countries totaled 11.056 billion dollars, a year-on-year increase of 14.81%, accounting for 37.75% of the total.
Export volume to the BRICS countries arrived at 3.65 billion USD, an increase of 4.17%; export volume to ASEAN reached 3.435 billion dollars, an increase of 39.22%; export volume to Africa amounted to 2.813 billion US dollars, an increase of 10.72%.
Xu introduced that in this session we’ve extended service and function of Canton Fair and given full play to its role of a platform for all-round opening up and “buying from, selling to and benefitting the world”, shone the name card of “Made in China”, and supported exhibitors to explore and diversify international market and upgrade China’s foreign trade, in order for products of high quality, better design and stronger function to benefit the whole world. Firstly, better serve the quality growth of foreign trade. We’ve stuck to the principle of “innovative, specialized, targeted and delicate”, launched global promotion in a targeted manner, and ensured the quality of buyers and diversified buyer origin. We saw a large attendance of 74722 new buyers, accounting for 40.17% of the total; which helps exhibitors maintain their traditional markets while open up emerging ones to optimize global market mix. Despite the diversified export channels nowadays, Canton Fair remains as the most important channel for Chinese companies and products to develop global market, and the ballast stone and anchor for China’s foreign trade development. In this session we’ve backed exhibiting companies to improve quality, create brand, and shift the source of growth, while vast exhibitors build up confidence and transform from scale expansion to quality and benefit improvement and from price advantage to comprehensive competitive edges centered on technology, standard, brand, quality and service. Transparent TV, IoT fridge, intelligent central air-conditioning, smart butler robot and other innovative products of high technological content and with high added value are exhibited with remarkably improved quality, which demonstrates the latest achievements of the transformation and upgrading of “Made in China” and creates a “feast” of China’s manufacturing industry for global buyers. We’ve also enhanced the Fair’s role of facilitating trade by design and encouraged exhibitors to extend to the high-end value chain. 111 design institutes from 16 countries and regions participated in the fair, and provided promotion and design service for 14070 companies/times. 74 exhibitors and 106 products have won the 2019 CF Awards. The CF Awards display hall was renovated in this session and receives 1500 visitors daily, with greater marketing effect and better exemplary function of encouraging exhibitors to engage in self innovation. Secondly share the opportunities of Chinese and global markets among overseas exhibitors. The International Pavilion in this session has attracted 642 exhibiting companies from 38 countries and regions, providing an international public platform of “selling to and buying from the world” for overseas companies and products to enter the Chinese market and open up global market. Thirdly, promote opening up of localities. At this Canton Fair we’ve organized over 70 promotion events for 7 regional industrial clusters and 39 national bases of foreign trade upgrading and featured industrial bases of more than 40 provinces and cities. These efforts have improved the reputation and influence and local featured industries, facilitated companies and brands to go global, promoted the development of open regional economy, and received great appraisal from these localities, exhibitors and buyers. Fourthly, provide tailored high-end information service for exhibitors. In this session, we held 112 conferences and forums, including 29 thematic forums, covering fields such as regional market, foreign trade situation, global bulk commodities, supply chain and distribution, fashion and trend, etc; a total sum of over 3000 audiences attended these forums. The 2019 Canton Fair International Trade Development Forum with the theme “Embracing the New Economic and Trade Era” was attended by over 300 representatives from global think tanks and financial, business, trade fields, where new status quo and opportunities in the international financial and trade fields were discussed. The Forum releases the report Sharing the Treasure Island——Upgrading of China Economic and Trade in the Time of Great Changes and points the accurate direction for Chinese companies to conduct economic and trade cooperation. Combining the current hot-spot issues and characteristics of industrial development, various forums not only share insightful information and pragmatic solution of strategic value, but also provide a platform of dialogue for participants to talk about global economic and trade issues, contributing Canton Fair voice and solution for the global economic and trade development in the new era.
Xu introduced that the Canton Fair Complaint Station handled 440 IPR cases, with 580 exhibitors filed and 241 determined as constituting alleged infringement. Compared with the previous session, the number of cases handled increased by 63, the number of filed enterprises increased by 72, and the number of alleged infringement down by 5. The Station also dealt with 40 trade disputes, 22 less than the last session; 24 of them were successfully solved after mediation.
In this session, we welcomed 813 exhibitors (accumulatively) from poor areas, covering 15 product categories and 45 sections; among these, 228 stands in the Traditional Chinese Specialty section covers 4,500 square kilometers, increased by 38 compared with the 125th session. There were 207 exhibitors from 22 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions participating in the Traditional Chinese Specialty section, an increase of 37 compared with that of the 125th session. Various specialties were exhibited at the Canton Fair, including food, men and women’s clothing, medicines, health products and medical equipment. We’ve successfully held the promotion event for Traditional Chinese Specialty section and built a platform for cooperation and networking of these exhibitors and buyers through display, runway show, taste tour and etc. 32 exhibitors from 18 trading delegations participated in the event. The transaction volume for the enterprises in poverty-stricken area has achieved stable growth, laying a solid foundation for winning the hard battle of poverty alleviation and boosting foreign trade development of poor areas.
Xu states that we continue to advance “Smart Canton Fair” and Online offline integration centered on 6 new business models—i-Service, i-Preview, i-Travel, i-Matching, i-Verification, i-Promotion has taken shape. Various smart services have been optimized and upgraded. According to statistics, wifi users totaled 234080, an increase of 43% over the last year. On-site Internet service was used over 173000 times. Exhibitor & Product system has been visited for over 228,000 times. “Highlight products” were widely welcomed, which was visited for 42000 times by users, which facilitated brand companies to develop global market. Achievements in building Smart Canton Fair show that Canton Fair not only is a “big guy” in import and export, but also has “big wisdom” in digital development. Apart from “selling to and buying from the world”, it can also connect the world with its “intelligence” and allow attendees to enjoy “smart” life. We are committed to build an online-offline integrated platform and have blazed a path of high quality development, a vivid explanation of “digital China”.
Xu mentioned that in this session we’ve implemented Canton Fair Green Development Plan 2.0 comprehensively to consolidate our progress and improve the quality of green development, contributing Canton Fair’s wisdom to green development of China’s exhibition industry. Evaluation Guide of Green Booth has gained project approval from the National Standardization Administration and compiling of the standards advanced. We’ve held the Canton Fair “Green Space” show i.e. Canton Fair Green Awards Ceremony and awarded 88 winners of the 125 session. We’ve also initiated the selection of 126th Canton Fair Green Awards; 384 exhibitors have signed up for the competition. With the responsibility towards environmental protection of exhibitors and booth contractors enhanced, the amount of solid waste has been reduced, the environment of the Complex has been further improved, the safety of green booths improved and onsite display results enhanced, realizing a virtuous cycle of economic development and environmental protection.
Xu said that in this session we have strengthened our regulations on booth usage, dealt with 36 companies in violation of such regulations. By disqualifying exhibitors, deducting the number of general booths of the trading delegation that the violating exhibitor is in, disqualifying this trading delegation for being commended, and publishing the result of such punishment on Canton Fair News, we’ve maintained the quality and negotiating order of Canton Fair. We’ve also established the concept of secure development. According to the multi-pronged approach of security ensured by people, technology and objects, we’ve strengthened coordination of security forces of our own and those out-sourced, bettered many kinds of emergency precaution plans, implemented security measures, improved security related technology, established a comprehensive security and precaution system, and strived to guarantee security with stricter requirements, higher standards and more solid measures. This session was held smoothly and securely, with no incidents of criminal or public order cases, terrorist attack, fire, food poisoning, major epidemic, or traffic congestion. We created a secure and comfortable environment for customers from home and abroad to negotiate and achieve orders.
